“How did that make you feel?”
How often do we consider asking that question of our friends and families, even if we don’t say the words out loud? Probably not often enough, especially when we know a friend or family is facing a challenge. And that’s when authentic empathy is one of the best gifts we can offer to our loved ones.
Research is beginning to suggest that philanthropy–an act of giving–is one of the best ways to boost the spirits of both the giver and the receiver. And that’s what First Bra Foundation℠ is all about. First Bra’s mission is to give breast cancer survivors sense of renewal, through a simple but powerful expression: a new bra. First Bra is the first nonprofit organization to go beyond breast cancer survivorship education and advocacy, to actually put something tangible in the hands of the survivor. That is very powerful, since First Bra is intended to be a symbol of a new beginning. First Bra provides survivors with a free bra of their choice along with a personalized fitting experience that will lift their spirits.
Why does this work so well to create that authentic empathetic experience that enriches both the giver and the receiver? According to research conducted at the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California at Berkeley, the feelings associated with giving money to a favorite charity, volunteering, recycling, donating, sharing, caring and all of the other ways to do good are also powerful tools for building self esteem and confidence. This research is aligned with the most basic notion of “philanthropy,” which, according to the classic dictionary definition, means “love of humanity” in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing “what it is to be human” on the part of both the giver and the receiver.
Giving and receiving are at the heart of First Bra. Visit our website today to learn how you can make a difference in the life of a breast cancer survivor.
